In brief

What this research concludes

THE THESIS OF THE THESES: under every film sat the same two questions, asked until they no longer needed the subject — compared with what, and as of when? Before any film said anything about an investment it fixed what a number, a result or a story should be compared with (a bar, a control, the same sentence on another date, the company beside it in the same layer, the nearest thing that did not move, the cash that pays for it, the price) and when that comparison could have been known and would be answered.

The judgment skill this hands over

When the next story arrives, write down the claim underneath it before the answer does: compared with what, as of when, and what would make you act differently. When nothing published exists to compare it with, say so and use the numbers that do exist. Then ask whether the price already believes the same thing.

What we investigated

Compared with what? And as of when?

This is episode 14 of Investing in the AI Era, a 14-episode course. The film tells the story; this note is the research behind it, kept inspectable.

How we tested it

Researched to be refuted, not confirmed

Candidate claims went to an independent pass instructed to refute them against primary sources. Survivors became evidence; casualties became the refused list below.

The method, in the research team's own words

AI14 is synthesis-heavy by design. (1) Thirteen read-only course readers (wf_4735ecb6-c40, 0 errors, ~1.87M subagent tokens) over every treatment, script, packet, pre-registration, founder review and QA record for AI01–AI13, plus the producer's full read of all thirteen locked narrations → course/research/AI14-COURSE-SYNTHESIS-MATRIX.md and AI14-META-THESIS-CANDIDATES.md (ten candidate theses), committed (9a21c2f) before any external research. (2) Pre-registration of six capstone hypotheses and four external leads (f62d0d7). (3) One wave, three bounded primary-source lanes, one agent each, no retries (wf_174839f9-837): hindsight; feedback and forecasting practice; the status of the course's own pending dated tests. Adjudicated in AI14-lanes/adjudication-research.json; most new facts deliberately not narrated. (4) Three refuters, one pass, on draft 1 (R1 the capstone thesis, R2 callback fidelity, R3 new facts and course-synthesis counts), adjudicated in course/research/AI14-refutation.json. (5) Producer read-only primary checks on the frozen DowJo app repo (onboarding redirect; product law). Verdict vocabulary: SUPPORTED / CORRECTED / MISLEADING / UNSUPPORTED / DO-NOT-NARRATE.

What the evidence says

58 claims survived refutation

Each carries its source, the date the thing happened and the date it was said — two different facts — and its limits, stated by the research team rather than left for you to discover.

Groups II and IV were the same people, so the combined N of 119 double-counts some subjects. Only 55% of the original predictors came to the second session; absentees were mailed the recall questionnaire (Group V). The effect was measured with a sign test on the proportion of subjects biased, not as a standardized effect size. It is asymmetric: clear for events believed to have happened, weak or non-significant for events believed not to have happened. It grew with delay: 84% of subjects biased after 3–6 months vs 67% after 2 weeks (z = +1.95), for events believed to have happened. The original predictions were described as 'generally quite accurate'; it is memory, not forecasting, that drifted. The authors motivate the study by noting that judging one's own past predictions depends on 'the veracity of these remembered or reconstructed predictions' (p. 1).

Limits: The newest Microsoft date notice found was from 8 July 2026 and covered the FY26 Q4 report on 29 July 2026. Microsoft's investor events page loaded without event data in the fetch tool, so its silence proves nothing. Third-party calendars disagree and are unconfirmed, citing 27 October or 28 October 2026. The strongest case against this

There is no single course-wide method; the thirteen episodes teach distinct domain tools, and the apparent unity is the compliance rule plus a house style.

Carried at full strength, before the conclusion — not as a footnote.

Strongest points: H4: AI06's evidence ladder, AI07's two lines, AI10's subtractions and AI13's sizing gap are different instruments that do not transfer verbatim. Compliance confound: a course barred from buy/sell/hold verdicts will always look as if it replaces verdicts with something. Template artefact: the matrix fields force every episode to have an assumption and a boundary. House shape: the studio itself flagged a repeated "the thing you are looking at is not the thing that matters" shape (AI11 FORM-CONSTRAINT.md). Motivated reading: the leading candidate was formed before the readers returned.

Verdict: PARTIALLY SUPPORTED. The tools are distinct, and the finale must not flatten them into one question. The generating move survives on regularities the template does not force (close grammar, refusals of all-outcome explanations, self-dating, self-bounded rules). The compliance confound is weakened, not removed, because the replacement questions were selected by evidence.

History, under test

The strongest historical case

What the past licenses — and, stated just as plainly, what it does not.

The course applied its method to itself and lost its own bet: AI01 N36 promised that Episode Eleven would show one export rule bullish and bearish for the same company; AI11's pre-registered research found that clause real but thin and produced "an announcement is not a rule".

What it licenses: That conclusions carry dates and a method must be willing to overturn its own plan.

What it does not license: That Episode One was wrong, or that every plan in the course lost.

Sources: course/scripts/AI01-theme-is-not-a-thesis.json N36 course/storyboards/AI11-treatment.md §1 course/research/AI11-lanes/FORM-CONSTRAINT.md

What would change our mind

The conclusion is wrong if…

The capstone thesis (M11) would be wrong if any film's central number has nothing to compare it with, or its explanation depends on something nobody could have known at the time; that test is spoken in the film (N31) and checkable by any viewer. The refuted draft-1 thesis (checkability; refusal of yes/no questions) is recorded in AI14-refutation.json.

What remains uncertain

What we still do not know

Stated by the research team, in full, rather than smoothed over.

  • Whether the four-part claim transfers for a retail learner outside the course's examples is not tested by anything in this packet.
  • Modern direct replications of a related hindsight design are mixed (E1-06); no modern replication of the own-prediction design was found.
  • Training effects in forecasting tournaments are modest and contested (E3-1, E3-4); not narrated.
  • No evidence was found that keeping a decision record improves investment returns (E1-10); the film claims none.
  • Five of the thirteen cited masters are not founder-approved (AI05, AI06, AI07, AI09 delivered; AI03 approved per its FINAL record though its registry string is stale).

What we refused to publish

18 claims we would not say — and why

The do-not-narrate list. Some are popular; some are true but unproven; some are simply not this note’s to make. Each refusal is enforced in production, not just recorded.

12 Refuted2 Unverifiable2 Partly unverifiable2 Unresolvable
  1. RefutedX01

“AI is a bubble / AI is not a bubble”

    Verdict: REFUTED — misstates AI12

Why: AI12 refused whether or when (N09); a bubble is a diagnostic definition, not a verdict (matrix §5 CB-16/17).

  2. RefutedX02

    “Policy announcements do not matter”

    Verdict: REFUTED — misstates AI11

Why: AI11 N50: "it is not nothing. It is evidence about what might bind."

  3. RefutedX03

“AI cannot beat humans / humans will always win”

    Verdict: REFUTED — misstates AI13

Why: AI13 refused both; M6 was not an AI study (matrix §5 CB-18).

  4. UnverifiableX04

“The method, or a decision record, improves investment returns or beats the market”

Verdict: UNVERIFIABLE — no evidence found (E1-10)

Why: E1-10 registered NOT FOUND; AI13 N49–N50: for most people the comparison that matters is an index fund.

  5. RefutedX05

“"I knew it all along" / people insist they knew the outcome / everyone misremembers”

    Verdict: REFUTED — overstates E1-01/E1-02

Why: E1-01 CORRECTED, E1-02: the original author says the title overstated the result; the effect is about three-quarters of students, for events believed to have happened.

  6. Partly unverifiableX06

“Forecasting-tournament training dramatically improves judgment / makes a better investor”

Verdict: PARTIALLY SUPPORTED but modest and contested (E3-1, E3-4); not narratable

Why: E3-1 modest (6–12% Brier), E3-4 contested reanalysis, E3-6 no returns measured.

Show the remaining 12 refused claims
  1. RefutedX07

“Kahneman proved stock picking is luck / markets are unpredictable”

    Verdict: REFUTED — overstates E2-2

Why: E2-2: hedged "to a good approximation", theoretical, individual stock prices only.

  2. Partly unverifiableX08

“Hindsight bias costs bankers money (Biais & Weber as causal)”

Verdict: PARTIALLY — correlational only (E1-07)

Why: E1-07 correlational, pay bands, between-person measure.

  3. UnverifiableX09

“Specific unannounced report dates (e.g. "27 October", "19 November")”

Verdict: UNVERIFIABLE — dates not announced as of 2026-09-14 (E4)

    Why: E4-02, E4-03, E4-05: not announced as of 14 Sep 2026; third-party estimates conflict.

  4. RefutedX10

“Oracle as a pending late-October test”

Verdict: REFUTED — Oracle already reported (E4-04)

Why: E4-04: Oracle reported on 10 September 2026 on its own calendar.

  5. UnresolvableX11

“The suspensions will be / have been extended, or will lapse”

    Verdict: UNRESOLVABLE — future event (E4-08, E4-10)

Why: E4-08, E4-10: intent to seek an extension is not an extension; no extension found.

  6. UnresolvableX12

“Any prediction of what the pending tests will show”

    Verdict: UNRESOLVABLE — future outcomes

    Why: Pre-registration E4 scope guard.

  7. RefutedX13

“This course was never about artificial intelligence”

Verdict: REFUTED — overclaim (treatment §3)

Why: Overclaim: the AI-era facts were real and taught; the honest line is that the facts expire and the act repeats (treatment §3).

  8. RefutedX14

“The consequence is never where the attention is (misdirection as the thesis)”

Verdict: REFUTED — house shape and contrarian doctrine (candidate M4)

    Why: Rejected candidate M4: studio house shape (AI11 FORM-CONSTRAINT.md) and contrarian as doctrine (AI01 N21, AI03 N48–N49, AI06 N28, AI10 N25).

  9. RefutedX15

“Episode One was wrong about Episode Eleven”

    Verdict: REFUTED — misstates AI11 treatment §1

Why: AI11 treatment §1: the clause was "real but thin"; the record pointed somewhere stronger. A promise reframed, not refuted.

  10. RefutedX16

“Every episode's plan lost to its evidence”

    Verdict: REFUTED — matrix §2.5

Why: Matrix §2.5: at least four spines overturned; AI01–AI04 confirmed with changed proof; AI06, AI08, AI10 sharpened.

  11. RefutedX17

    “AI04 N60, AI03 N48, AI08 S08 hiring line, AI06 N51 as a base rate, AI10 "26 days", AI13 S11 card without the risk clause”

Verdict: REFUTED — canonical debt (matrix §4)

Why: Canonical debt (matrix §4); never quoted.

  12. RefutedX18

“DowJo features, routes, pricing, sign-up, or any promised outcome”

    Verdict: REFUTED — product-pitch test

Why: Product-pitch test (pre-registration Part C.4); dowjo_handoff Concept, no route on screen.

Complete evidence depth

The research desk

Everything the research evaluated before it was distilled — including what it rejected, and why.

This note predates DowJo’s research-preservation standard, so the pre-collapse shortlist was not kept. Everything the film was allowed to say — and refused to say — is above.

Challenge the argument, bring evidence, or ask what would change our mind. This note is discussed in 📡 Intelligence Watch, a DowJo room where members compare reads. Filings, news events, and what they actually mean — the discussion room for the intelligence feed.

Read and reply, then keep following the story — you come straight back to this note.

Education-first ground rules apply in every room: mechanisms and evidence, never calls.

Reading is where judgment starts. Practice is where DowJo measures it — and remembers what to train next.

Provenance — where this note comes from

This page is a deterministic projection of canonical research artifacts. It adds presentation and discovery; it never adds, removes or softens a finding. Question taken from the descriptor; thesis from the packet. Projected 21 Sep 2026 by dowjo-research-projector v1.1.0 from origin commit c83c8797ab79.
